Summer in the City Celebration!
Downtown Ionia
June 20 – 22, 2013
The “Summer in the City Celebration” has been created with the goal of hosting a summer festival in downtown Ionia that will create a destination event for tourists. This festival will feature family-friendly activities and is expected to increase visitor traffic in the downtown business district.
The event is currently seeking sponsors, volunteers and all types of vendors. In order to get involved or register your business or event for the festival, contact Downtown Development Authority Director Linda Curtis at 616-527-1420.

Ionia Environmental Improvement Coalition
On behalf of the IEIC Board of Directors I'd like to thank all those that came out to work and those that couldn''t but supported the Ionia Environmental Improvement Coalition First Annual Grand River Cleanup in one way or another! It was really amazing to us just how much we were able to accomplish together in one afternoon...especially with the bugs and heat! We had 45 volunteers dig in and get some work done. Here is a link to the Facebook Photo Album that has the results of our cleanup action!
We collected 65 full bags, 21 tires, and many more random objects that could not fit into bags! Weight and/or yardage will be reported to us soon by the city!
Please take a second and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment that rightly accompanies taking in the result of our collaborative effort. Please share this link with your friends via email, Facebook, Twitter, etc and let them know they can enjoy a cleaner river trail, healthier more beautiful river and natural habitat surrounding arguably one of the best river trails in the county! As I walked up and down the trail taking pictures I welled up with pride to be a native Ionian.
Many people biking and jogging by thanked us for our work. Now we and they can use the trail in peace without seeing litter and debris. We can stop to pick up that random piece of litter knowing there isn't a seemingly insurmountable task surrounding us that requires attention.
I liken trash in natural areas to be sort of like receiving a phone call in the middle of watching a film in which you are completely engrossed. The litter breaks up your suspension of disbelief. Immersing oneself in nature can have a restorative and de-stressing effect. Litter disturbs that process by reminding us of the world we are trying to temporarily escape, one on which we hope to gain perspective.
Now the debris and litter we collected won't end up in Lake Michigan during future flooding events!
We are planning a couple events for the summer. In addition to those
we are considering a Fall Grand River Cleanup, perhaps in the beginning of September. It could focus more on the banks and riverbed when water levels have dropped a few feet.
We'd love your feedback on the cleanup. When you have time please let us know what worked and what didn't so we can decide whether or not to hold another river cleanup, and if so, how to make it better. We have a few ideas to be sure! Thanks for your patience and enthusiasm during our first event. We hope this is the start of something beautiful!
humbly yours,
Mark Fate and the Ionia Environmental Improvement Coalition

In recognition of your commitment to volunteerism and your community:
ACTION: What has your nominee done or is currently doing?
Amy has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. She has been volunteering and helping people non-stop. Without Amy's hard work to help a friend I would not be able to do something that means a great deal to me.... Heather Beeman
