A Meritorious Man

In an simple, humble cottage
Far from the ancient splendor
Lived a most meritorious man
Worthy of the highest honor.
No battle prize did he win,
Nor Caesars gold abundant.
No pennants floating in the breeze,
Nor trophies on his mantel.
Say you, what makes this man so worthy,
With none of life's gaudy trappings?
Say I, the heart of gold inside
Worth more than all life's medals.
The heart that bears life's blows,
And always avoids provocation
But has a hug for those in despair,
Or helping hand for those that need it.
Oh yes he exists...no not in flesh
But rather the spirit of his province
Lives on in lives he touched.
